St. Joseph’s Cemetery has an incredible history going back to the early 1800’s. There are 2 parts to the property, which was surveyed in February of 1914, the Historic Cemetery and the New Cemetery. Life in those early times was very difficult, with many diseases taking people's lives. Another contributor to the high mortality rate were all the miners who were either injured or killed in mining accidents and explosions. These men immigrated from all over the world to come to Krebs and McAlester to work in the mines, hoping for a better way of life for themselves and their families. There is a Memorial at the cemetery to Commemorate the approximately 100 coal miners who lost their lives in an explosion in 1892.
